The Guyana Metropolitan Relief Organization (GuyMetro) has been dedicated to addressing the critical health issue of diabetes in Guyana during its mission trips. Guyana faces significant public health challenges, with alarming statistics indicating that about 16.4% of adults aged 20 to 79 are affected by diabetes, and some studies suggest prevalence rates as high as 18%. The World Health Organization has noted that over half of the population struggles with being overweight or obese, further exacerbating the risk of diabetes. Through targeted initiatives, GuyMetro aims to educate the local community about diabetes prevention and management, promoting healthier lifestyles and improved health outcomes.

One of the key components of GuyMetro's mission is the diabetes clinic established at Davis Hospital. This clinic serves as a vital resource for individuals with diabetes, providing free, essential medical care and education to help manage the condition. Patients receive guidance on healthy eating practices, the importance of physical activity, and the value of regular health check-ups. The organization's outreach extends beyond diabetes care to overall health education, equipping residents with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives.

The mission trips provide valuable dental and vision care services to hundreds of individuals. Many community members lack access to essential health services, and the organization strives to address these needs through its comprehensive healthcare approach. Further, we recognize and address the impact of diabetes through rehabilitation services that include instruction in exercise programs and the distribution of equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and canes.  By integrating dental, vision, and rehabilitation care with diabetes education, GuyMetro delivers a holistic health service that addresses multiple aspects of community health and well-being.
